The St. Louis Cardinals and Miami Marlins hold spring training at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter. The Palm Beach Ballpark, which opened in West Palm Beach in February 2017, is home to the Washington Nationals and Houston Astros for spring training.

Formerly known as the West Palm Beach Public Library, it is the oldest library in Palm Beach County and has been open since 2006. The Palm Beach and Cross County malls were in operation for a few years before being closed in 1997 and 2010, respectively. The area expanded after Henry Flagler expanded the Florida East Coast Railway and built the Royal Poinciana Hotel and the Breakers in Whitehall. The Montreal Expos and Atlanta Braves held their home games at the Palm Beach Bay Hotel. Hammerheads played in the Atlantic League, as did the New York - New Jersey Yankees, the Chicago White Sox and other Major League Baseball teams. Major League Baseball teams such as the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, New Orleans Saints, Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants also played there.
The storm caused structural damage, with wind gusts peaking at 146 mph in Palm Beach County. Palm Bay, like the rest of South Florida, began to suffer from economic turmoil and was forced out of the region during the Great Depression.
The 6.150mm of rainfall flooded numerous buildings, some roofs were ripped off and hundreds of square kilometres flooded, including Palm Bay, Palm Beach County and parts of Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
The five houses on the refuge were built near the bay and have a jetty and a designated fishing area. Further inland, a wind-driven storm surge of up to 4 feet inundated parts of Palm Beach County and Broward County, as well as the city of Miami.
